In this post I will show you how to set up Google Webmaster Tools and how to submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. For creating an account on Google Webmaster Tools you need to have a gmail account and you need to have installed Google Analytics on your site before.

Create Your Account on Webmaster Tools

Search on Google “Webmaster Tools”. Log in through your gmail account.

Then add your website, not the www. part, only the domain.com. Click Add a property, as shown in the picture below.

After you click that, a table which asks you to the verify the ownership the ownership of your website. You will verify it using Google Analytics.

So choose Alternative Methods and select Google Analytics.

Then click Verify.

With your Google Webmaster account you can determine search traffic, links to your site, manual actions etc. You can determine Google indexing (the number of pages that you got indexed.

If you click on Crawl, you can crawl errors and stats that could be preventing your pages from indexing. And when you fix something you can fetch it.

If it’s a new account there’s not much data to look for now. However, the information from Google Webmaster Tools is going to be very important for you.

How to Submit a Sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools

This requires the addition of a plugin.

Install “Google XML Sitemaps”

XML is a universal programming language and “Google XML Sitemaps” is the name of the plugin that you need to install. For this, go to Plugins and select Add new.

Search for “Google XML Sitemaps” (the word “sitemaps” is in plural). Click Install.

Then click Activate.

Setting up your Sitemap

Go to Settings and then select XML-Sitemap.

At the top of the page that opens there is the URL of your sitemap which you will submit to your Google Webmaster Tools account. Every time that you will update your site that URL will be updated.

You are going to leave this page as it is and not change any of its details except in the section Change frequencies, you can the frequency when your posts are going to be crawled by Google to Daily (if you plan to post daily) or weekly (if you plan to post a couple of times in a week).

Scroll down and click Update Options.

How to add URL to Webmaster Tools

Go to your Webmaster Tools account and click Crawl and Sitemap.

Click on Add/Test Sitemap which is in the upper right corner of the page.

Go to the Dashboard of your website and copy the last part of the sitemap’s URL and paste it your Webmaster Tools account in the table that opens when you click Add/Test Sitemap. Click Submit and refresh the page.

When you add your site’s sitemap on your Google Webmaster Tools account, it will lead to better rankings for your posts and pages.

Get Google Analytics Tracking Code

For this you need a gmail account, if you don’t have one you have to create it. Google Analytics is completely free, so there’s no cost to get the statistics related to your site and also there is no other better tool for this.

Go to Google Analytics Homepage and click on Sign up on the right corner of the page.

Choose an account name. You can have many websites within the same account. Then write your website name. Grab your website URL and paste it there (just the URL, not the http part), select a relevant industry. Choose your country and time zone.

If you want to share your data with Google you can let the box that asks this checked. I recommend that you don’t share your Google data with Google and others. So uncheck them. Then click on Get Tracking ID.

In the table that opens choose your country and then click Agree. You will be able to see your tracking ID. Copy that ID. Now go to your WordPress site.

 

How to Install Google Analytics for WordPress

In this section I will show you how to install Google Analytics using the All in One Seo Plugin. So you need have installed the All in One Seo Plugin on your website. It’s actually a very simple process.

Go to All in One SEO, General Settings. Find the Google Analytics ID, which is under Google Settings. Add your ID. Paste the ID in the Google Analytics section. Then click Update the Options at the end of the page.

Check to see if it worked

Go to your site and visit a random page. Now you going going to check the statistic for yourself that will show that there is one visitor at your site which is you.

To check this, in your Google Analytics page, click on Home.

On the new table that opens click on All Web Site Data.

Click on Real-Time and Overview, and you will be able to see your website’s data.

You will see 1 visitor in the last minutes which is you, with your location data. This indicated that Google Analytics was installed.
